The Indian
Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP), formerly known as the
Spastics Society of Eastern India, was started in 1974.
In those days, children with cerebral palsy had little opportunity
of accessing meaningful education, or even basic care and
therapy. This realisation prompted a small group of parents
and well-wishers to start the organisation.
IICP was the first NGO dedicated to meeting
the needs of people with cerebral palsy in eastern India.
From a small school with two children, IICP today supports
over 3000 families. Services are offered to children and
young adults with cerebral palsy regardless of their socio-economic
background. IICP constantly endeavours to find sponsors
in order to give concessions for special furniture, aids
and appliances, and user charges are dependent on the family
income. Needy children are given free medicine and supplementary
nutritional meals.
