Decades of service to the Nation since 1974

The Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP), formerly known as the Spastics Society of Eastern India, was started in 1974. In those days, children with cerebral palsy had little opportunity of accessing meaningful education, or even basic care and therapy. This realisation prompted a small group of parents and well-wishers to start the organisation.

IICP was the first NGO dedicated to meeting the needs of people with cerebral palsy in eastern India. From a small school with two children, IICP today supports over 3000 families. Services are offered to children and young adults with cerebral palsy regardless of their socio-economic background. IICP constantly endeavours to find sponsors in order to give concessions for special furniture, aids and appliances, and user charges are dependent on the family income. Needy children are given free medicine and supplementary nutritional meals.

The main objectives of the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy is to act as catalyst for the implementation of legislation that ensures equal rights and inclusion of people with disability in every aspect of the civil society, undertake human resource development and man power training, conduct research and provide services for the persons with disability, especially those with cerebral palsy and their families in both urban and rural areas. In 2004 the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India gave IICP the award for the ‘Best Institute for Disability’ in recognition of its services.
