Barsha Bhattacharya is a charming and
pleasant young woman with cerebral palsy. She is a
resident of Cheshire Home at Tollygunge and attends
the Adult Training Centre of the Indian Institute of
Cerebral Palsy (IICP). An active member of the Advocacy
Group 'Ankur' of IICP, Barsha, despite her speech and
physical impairment, is a fighter all the way.
Confined to a wheelchair, Barsha
is a very sociable person who likes to share her
thoughts, feelings and aspirations with those who are
close to her. She is an AAC (Augmentative &
Alternative Communication) user and has participated as
a trainer in AAC courses. She is now
preparing for the Secondary Examination conducted
by Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya, West Bengal to achieve her
educational goals. She has appealed to the Principal
Secretary, School Education to make necessary amendments
in the examination system for people challenged like
her. The dreamer in her is captured in her writings in
verse and is also a testimony to her immense creativity.
We share two of her translated poems with you.

MY DISABILITY
Disabled I may be But will not stay
confined Shall break all doors And cross the
difficult times To see the world I shall
rise Facing the current Strong and wise |
YOUR COMING
You came like the southern breeze And filled my
heart with peace You came like the moon in the dark
sky Your coming lit my life You came like the
autumn clouds I was swept with you by my side You
came like the colours of spring And splashed over my
whole being |
